Did you know that the number one page that appears on Google search results in 42.25% of click-through traffic? SEO-friendly blog content should be the focus of your website if it is not already.

There’s a tendency to overstuff blogs with keywords — which never leads to the desired outcome. Using a “one size fits all” approach to SEO also does not work. Here are some necessary steps to produce SEO friendly blogs that rank on page one:

Identify primary keywords

Identify the keywords and phrases that your customers would be searching. The below criteria should be followed when doing so:

  • What’s trending — use social media and SEO tools to understand what is being said about the topic of your blog post. This should contribute to your selection of the keywords and phrases.
  • Competition rate — to maximise your chances of ranking higher, use variations of keywords that are not as popular. The more specific your phrases are to your niche market, the better.
  • Identify your competitors’ keywords — Use online SEO writing tools to understand what keywords your competitors may be using.

It’s important to remember that identifying specific long-tailed phrases or keywords will increase your chances versus single generic phrases. Users generally search for long-winded specific phrases, and your goal is to determine what those are.

Use keywords in your blog post

After the research has been completed, it is important that your keywords and phrases appear in the following places:

  • Blog Title
  • First paragraph
  • Meta Description
  • Page Title
  • Subheadings (H1, H2, H3, etc.)

A good rule of thumb is your keyword should appear in your text about 1.5% to 2%. You also need to hyperlink words in the article to your “about us” page, as well as other content you want your reader to click. External links are also a useful tool to drive searches to your blog.

Never compromise the quality of the content of your blog for SEO writing. It’s essential to keep your audience in mind and the message you are trying to deliver. Don’t give your reader a reason to click away. Engaging blog content will significantly increase the chances of the reader sharing it with their friends or colleagues — leading to organic traffic.

Importance of meta description

The description that appears at the bottom of your blog post title in a search engine is your meta description (up to 155 characters).

Your meta description should be written in the active voice. Make sure that it is fun and has a call-to-action. It is also advisable to include your keywords in the meta description. Review your competitors’ meta descriptions to ensure you are not duplicating.

Increase the length of your blog post

Blog posts that rank best are over 1000 words. Longer blog posts in the range of 2000+ words are optimal. However, don’t scare your reader with boring content. Make use of :

  • Bullet points — easier readability
  • Shorter paragraphs (maximum of three sentences)
  • Images — that are relevant. Remember to change your image title to what is being displayed. E.g., change from “IMG777211” to “dog running in the field.”
  • Diagrams / Graphs / infographics

Optimize your URL Link

Give yourself every chance to make SEO work for you. Instead of a blog post URL link looking like :

Fix the link so that it can reflect the title of your blog post, such as:

It allows Google to:

  • Identify your keyword
  • Allow users to read the article title in the URL link — leading to a higher click-through rate

Your blog post must be mobile and computer accessible

Mobile phones are the number one tool for reading blog posts. Consequently, you need to ensure that the URL you have is accessible via mobile and computer. Make sure it is one link — in that way you’re centralizing your SEO efforts. This will not only help your readers access it on any device but also rank your blog post higher.

So, the secret behind SEO friendly blog posts…

As stated, a well-integrated content piece that uses keywords, and that is specific to your target audience. This will lead to a higher search engine result page ranking in no time!
